In the heart of Antwerp, the botanical garden offers a relaxing moment and silence to the visitors. Situated in the Leopoldstraat, between the museum Mayer van den Bergh and the famous Rubens House.
The garden has been created almost 200 years ago, originally to cultivate medical plants. Since it functioned as a place of botanic and scientific experience.
Nowadays the garden is open for the public and shows a collection of more than 2.000 different plants of which several are protected.

Bourla Theater (Bourlaschouwburg) (200 m from the Theater Hotel)

The Bourla, also known as Bourlaschouwburg, is a theater built in neo-classical style on the grounds of a former carpet market ‘Tapissierspand’. The theater has been built on request of the city in 1827 by the architect Pierre Bourla. When finished in 1834 it was named the Grand Theater or the Royal French Theater.

The Bourla is the last remaining city theater in Europe with the original stage machinery. The building is protected and considered to be one of the most important historical buildings of Belgium.

 

The Rubens House (Rubenshuis) (250 m from the Theater Hotel)

The Rubens House - in Dutch Het Rubenshuis - nowadays a museum, is the former House and workplace of the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens. Here you will find the permanent collection of the artist but also special expositions.

Besides the works of the artist, the house itself and the beautiful garden is worth a visit.

Mayer van den Bergh Museum (250 m from the Theater Hotel)

The collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901) had a passion for art and like every visionary, he was well ahead of his time. He had a flair for works which at his time were not ‘fashionable’ but now they are appreciated worldwide. His interest went mainly to the art of The Netherlands at the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance between 1300 and 1500 AD, with  a predilection for Bruegel.

The Mayer van den Bergh Museum is one of the first museums created around a private collection.

The Virgin House (Maagdenhuis) (250 m from the Theater Hotel)

The Virgin House, founded in 1552, is a former orphanage for girls. In 1880 it was used by the administration of civil retirement housing and in 1925 it became a museum.
You will not only find a nice collection of art which has been legated to the Virgin House but also its history and functions of the building.


 

The Meir Palace (350 m from the Theater Hotel)

Open from Monday till Thursday from 9.00am till 6.00pm and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9.00am till 8.00pm

In the middle of Antwerp’s main shopping street you will find this nice Palace. The original building goes back to the 18th century and was built by a rich merchant. Several sovereigns took over the building, the first one was Napoleon Bonaparte and after him came King William of the Netherlands and the Belgian Kings.

The Market Square (Grote markt) (800 m from the Theater Hotel)

The Grote Markt is located in the heart of the old city center, surrounded by historical trading houses.
You will find the City Hall built in 1615, the trading houses Sint-Joris and de Valk and the Tourist office of Antwerp.

n the middle of the square you will find Brabo, a statue sculpted by Jef Lambeaux based on the city legend.


 

MAS Museum Aan de Stroom

The MAS is a must ! It is the place where the city and the harbor (second biggest in Europe) come together. The collection of the museum tells you the history of the city, the harbor and the world and they have a superb terrace with a panoramic view over Antwerp and its harbor.

Plantin Moretus Museum World heritage of UNESCO
